Tumblr Gives Me IDEAS

Tumblr has succeeded in swallowing me up. It’s awful, haha. However, I was able to find some cool stuff, like a list of historical documentaries, writing prompts, a post about introversion and this really cool mix of Gangnam Style. I also get to answer memes, though not often. I don’t have that many followers to be interested enough in giving me prompts, I guess. Elise responded to one, though, and I answered it! It’s about the three people that I think are awesome. I thought I’d post it here too:

Soooo late, I’m sorry. D: Anyway! This post is in answer to this meme, which I posted  some days ago. You put in Prussia and that means I have to list 3 People That I Think Are Awesome.

  1. Misha Collins. Honestly, Tom Hiddleston was supposed to be put here in his place just for being probably the sweetest man, a talented actor and for being God of Tumblr, but then I remembered Misha Collins. Misha Collins is most popularly known as Castiel from Supernatural. He’s also known to be off the wall and really, really cool with his fans. He’s very eccentric and funny. He once tweeted in Filipino. He posts funny pictures about himself and sometimes involving the Supernatural cast. He’s just so goofy and a lot of fun. And then you find out he set up a non-profit organization to help out over at Haiti. Awesome person? YES.
  2. Jose Rizal. National Hero of the Philippines and this is still being debated on. I’m not here to defend him and tell you why I think he should really be the Philippines’ National Hero because honestly, I am not 100% convinced that he should be either. But I can’t help admiring this man. He’s an inspiration, the one considered the First Filipino. How I would love to have even just an iota of his brilliance and ambition. Have you seen his credentials and achievements? GAH.
  3. My Mom. Cliche answer, probably, but can you imagine what my Mom has been through, what she’s still going through? We lost Tatay three years ago and even before that she was the breadwinner of the family. On top of that, her job has been in trouble the past two years or so because her company hasn’t been doing too well. And then she’s putting Noel through Nursing school and she shouldered the expenses for my hospitalization and everything since I got sick two years ago, too. But she’s still smiling, she’s still cheerful. If I were in her place, I think I would have broken. Seriously. I don’t know how she does it. She’s just AWESOME.

I hope I get more responses to memes, haha. They’re really fun and I always need prompts to express myself, really.

And speaking of expressing myself, particularly through writing, NaNoWriMo is just around the corner. For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and basically what you’re supposed to do if you enter is you have to finish a 50,000-word novel in one month. Sounds pretty hardcore, right? Well, for me, who has barely written a real story in forever, it damn well is! I always hear about it year after year, but it’s only now that I feel the urge to actually give it a try. WHICH IS CRAZY because I have no plot, no ideas, no nothing. And what about time, right?? Ah, but a little, annoying voice in my head is saying all these are just excuses and are thus UNACCEPTABLE. So I don’t know, really. But I have to admit this is really nagging at me and so.

Also related to writing. I am also getting this wicked urge to make notes. Like, take a pen and physically start writing on something. I wrote down my meds list for the next two weeks and that gave me an ungodly sort of glee that shouldn’t be possible over something as mundane as writing with a pen and paper. But there was glee. It was kind of embarrassing, haha. This reminds me of when I used to first write my fanfiction drafts longhand in my tiny, cramped, computer print-like handwriting before typing them all up in my old computer. Those were the days and this NaNoWriMo thing is giving me back that excitement. I’ll probably end up writing fanfiction again, which is kind of embarrassing for some reason. BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO. Maybe it’s embarrassing because by now you would think I have gone past the fanfiction “phase” by now. But no. That’s not quite happening. It’s kind of sad, you know? Here I am, wanting to write this novel or whatever, but alas, no original ideas come to mind…

Fandom and Tumblr, this is what you do to me. You give me crazy, exciting ideas and make me type in all caps.

This is What Happens When I Encounter Cheap Books and Stuff

Behold my book sale haul! Admittedly, this haul could have been larger. Thank goodness for some self control and budget constraints! 😛

So, what’ve we got?

  1. Isabel Allende’s Zorro. I’ve been looking for this book forever probably because I love Antonio Banderas’ Mask of Zorro and I was also a fan of other incarnations of the story in anime and comic forms in the past. Isabel Allende’s also a writer that we were required to read back in high school and getting to read her House of the Spirits was actually one of the more enjoyable reading assignments I ever had to do for school. Put both these things together and I think I’ve got something cool to add to the To-Read List.
  2. Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds (screenplay). I love the film and Michael Fassbender (even before I knew his name!), so of course I couldn’t resist this one, especially given how badass the cover looks.
  3. Julie Powell’s Julie and Julia. Another one that I got because I loved the film version. Plus it was a book about a woman trying out recipes. There’s food involved. How in the world am I supposed to pass this up?
  4. George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.  I’m sensing a pattern here. I first got in contact with Pygmalion through the film version of My Fair Lady which is based on this play. I just thought it would be wicked cool to have it in my collection.
  5. Bob Gill’s Logo Mania. This one, meanwhile, is for Elise. It’s this really creatively-made book about how a graphic designer solved some designing problems. I thought Elise would enjoy and appreciate this, so I got it.

Of course, there were some books that didn’t quite make the cut for various reasons. They are the Jennifer’s Body graphic novel (I really wasn’t that into it at the end of the day, though it was probably pretty cool), Nina Garcia’s Black Book of Style (Still a bit pricey at P315. The rest of my books cost half or less than half of that) and Karen Jay Fowler’s The Jane Austen Book Club (Kind of the same reason as with the graphic novel).

And since I was in bookstores and also made my rounds in Japanese P88 stores, of course I got myself new pens, notebooks and other stuff. Because I can.

Pens! Post its! Cute notebooks (though those notebooks aren’t all bought recently)! A portable reading light! This cute protective sleeve thing for my Kindle! I also got more notebooks and a pencil case yesterday but no pictures, because I was lazy. Maybe some other time this week. I was supposed to write this entry about all my stuff here (including how I was in the bookstore and actually squealed over cute post its and tiny sticky tabs) but again, lazy. Anyway, it’s better that you’re spared my weird love for office supplies, haha.

You guys know what to get me for my birthday and Christmas. *hinthint*

I’m Anti-Social, Awkward and Employed. Oh and I was in Makati today.

There’s this unknown number that had been sending me messages the past few weeks. I kept ignoring it, thinking it was just one of those people looking for a text mate and I had no time nor patience to give for a text mate, really. This person seemed very persistent, though, so I started thinking this may be someone I actually knew. So I finally texted back and asked them who they were. It turned out it was this guy whom my Aunt in Masbate gave my number to. She had mentioned to me before that it’d be nice for me to have guy friends. I told my Mom about this guy and she said she’s pretty sure the guy’s okay since my Aunt must know him and had enough confidence in him to give him my number. “It’s just friends. He’s not going to be marrying you!” Even my brother said to just give it a try. “Just befriend him.”

And what’s my stance on this? OH HELL NO. Now, I understand my aunts have this concern for me because I never seemed to be interested in romantic relationships. They wish for me eventually to have a boyfriend and then get married, you know, the whole shebang. I know they’re just concerned and they probably feel like they’re doing me some good, but to give my number away to some guy I don’t know without my consent? And make me befriend him? To put in effort in getting to know him when I’m not interested and didn’t ask for him to text me? I’m sorry, but no. I understand, it’s just to make friends, but what if I don’t want to make friends? Have they ever thought of that? I’m sorry for sounding like a bitch, but they have put me in a very difficult situation and I’m sure they don’t understand. I’m not a very social person and it’s hard for me to find interest in most people, especially if I haven’t met them face to face and I have no idea what their interests are. Sure, I can ask them, but as of now, I don’t think I can put in that effort when I’m kind of feeling offended that they’d just give my number to some guy without my knowledge and to then force me into a situation that I don’t care for, much less appreciate. Please don’t give me surprises like this. I don’t appreciate them and I pity the guy for having to spend time and money in texting me when I’m really not interested in getting to know him.

And how do I tell him politely that I don’t want him to text me anymore? Another social conundrum for anti-social little me. UGH. Another thing I don’t want to deal with.

My Korean boss has been here in the Philippines for two years or so and he hasn’t really been anywhere. Sure, he’s been to Baguio and some other places, but that’s it. Before, when Clark, our one and only male teacher, was around, he’d take our boss out on weekends to places like Luneta, the malls, et cetera, just so he can stretch his legs and just look around. Now though, Clark’s not with the company anymore and so Mr. Jang, my boss, is again just stuck doing nothing most weekends. He wants to go to other places, see other things in the Philippines, but he can’t do that without a guide since getting around here in Manila still escapes him and he fears being mugged again, which has already happened once. If only I were a guy, I’d take him out on weekends too and show him around. I’d take him wherever he wants to go, show him what he wants to see.

But I can’t because I’m a girl, he’s my boss and doing that by myself will be awkward, haha.

I was forced to go to Makati’s PhilHealth branch earlier this week because apparently that’s where Pasay-based companies are supposed to conduct their business with PhilHealth. It was a long commute, requiring an LRT ride from Edsa to Buendia and then switching to a Guadalupe-Cartimar jeepney. Well, not exactly a long commute when you think about it, I think it only took me 30 minutes or so, but I went around 1pm and the sun was high in the sky. It was so hot and it just wasn’t the best time to be going around, but I had no choice, really. As I was sitting in the cramped jeepney, sweating like a pig and being miserable, I realized how these trips to different government offices have made me pretty adept at commuting through public transportation and finding my way in unfamiliar areas in the Metro. I thought that was pretty cool.  Another skill to add to the skill set.

And since I’m already talking about work, let me tell you more about it. My three months’ probation contract is almost over and so far I think I’ve gotten the hang of working for my company. My bosses are pretty okay, though I have to say it’s both a joy and a curse to be working for them at times, haha. My co-workers are nice and friendly. The HR and Accounting side of my job are very challenging along with the dabbling in Legal stuff, but I’ve been coping so far. I hope my boss agrees to renewing my contract, haha. I hope I’ve been a good enough addition to the staff to keep for another six months or so.

Last night, we were sitting around the dining table talking and the subject of my job came up. Mom told Noel and his girlfriend, Yla, about how she encouraged me to take this job in the first place despite the low pay and I agreed. “It was better than sitting here at home feeling sorry for myself.” I said, then joked, “Now I can sit here and feel sorry for myself while getting paid!” Yeah, I do feel sorry for myself sometimes, my job has its tedious and difficult facets, but at least I’m being paid, hahaha.

I was in Makati today! I missed Makati so much like you wouldn’t believe! Believe me, if you work around the Pasay Rotonda area, you will appreciate Makati so very much. I would like to thank my Mom for being kind and sponsoring my hair spa and haircut at Hair Click, a Korean hair and beauty salon along Polaris St. in Bel Air, Makati. Beside it was this Korean grocery where we got kimchi and other Korean treats like chapssalddeok, which is the Korean version of mochi. Then we had lunch at Cafe Mediterranean in Greenbelt and then had frozen yogurt at Qoola. Mama wanted me take a picture with my new hair so we got that done in Greenbelt 3 and while we waited we browsed around Muji and Powerbooks. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like spending too much so I just looked around Muji though I wanted to get one of their notebooks. I ended up spending my money on cheaper, but still cute notebooks at Powerbooks. I also got a cheap pencil case to put my pens in and white out, because I love office supplies forever.

Now I’m back home and I’m quite tired but happy. It’s raining now and this entry is done.

Hello, Saturday. ❤
